lots of changes coming soon!

© Tina Vega Photography

Despite the dreariness outside, I have somehow managed to remain inspired inside.  Perhaps even BECAUSE of the dreariness!  Instead of focusing on the April snow showers, I have been intentional about filling my thoughts with things that fire me up.

Doing things that fire me up.

After a year in the making, I finally [FINALLY] have a clear vision for my photography business!  This was a process I began last spring with a new blog, logo, and packaging.  Then the introduction of the Everyday Session format.  And the Everyday Photographer Workshop.  I began by following my heart… which reminded me of why I started all of this in the first place:

To capture more than just a photograph.  To capture joy, hope, and love.  To capture life FULLY.  Real life.

Embracing life is my mantra; finding beauty even when conventional wisdom screams there is none.  Because when I changed the lens through which I viewed my own life so many years ago, it changed me.  Instead of viewing life as a soap opera full of tragedy and conflict, I began to look at my story from a new perspective.

The “ugliness” became a catalyst, a necessary part of who I am today.  Leading to beauty unimaginable through a relationship with Christ.  And I found purpose and meaning in the broken places because of it.

Much like the butterfly with its cocoon.

So I am on a quest.  A quest to appreciate life in its entirety.  A quest to help others view their lives through a diffferent lens and embrace their unique story.  To help others discover purpose and meaning in the hope that they, too, will be surprised by beauty.

[Keep your eyes peeled for a whole lotta changes taking place on my photography website over the course of the next month, including new session formats and pricing!]

family fun night :: pinz

I had been itching for some time with the family.  Like in the olden days, when we actually interacted with each other instead of our devices.  There is a sort of a weird triangulation-thing that happens when a person is texting (Instagramming, FBing, Tweeting) that reminds me of having a conversation with someone while they look behind you for the next person to engage.

There is also something irreplaceable about living in the present moment, fulling embracing the people and experiences directly in front of you.

That was my intention for Saturday night.  And when I shared my expectations with the kids a whole lot of moaning and groaning ensued.  That is… until they saw our Family Fun Night destination.

Pinz in Oakdale, Minnesota.  Granted there was a whole lotta arcade game playing:

And perhaps even a certain amount of zoning out that took place.

But when we asked our kids what their favorite part of the whole evening was, our 15 year old surprised us when he said “the dinner conversation.”

Holy cow.  We have dinner almost every night together, what in the world made this different?

I think for the first time in a long time, we were all there.  Fully.

The place was AWESOME.  The food at Harvey’s American Pub was DELICIOUS and service SPOT-ON.  And there was plenty to keep us busy with a laser maze, laser tag, bowling, and an arcade.  And the laser maze, by the way… coolest thing EVER!

If you look carefully, you will see the boys moving across the floor in the image above.  Reminded us of this scene from Chuck:

If you have a child with dreams of being a spy, you must check it out!!!

I even ran into someone from the 2013 Spring Weekend Scrapbooking Retreat, making the most of an early birthday celebration (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CYNDI!!!!) – a run-in which was special in and of itself. :)

The meaningful connections I went in search of that evening?  Totally got 100 times over.

pippy’s first school play

It was a very exciting week for my son’s best friend.

Pippy debuted in his first school play!  And we enjoyed every single second.  It’s clear Pippy has a knack for acting; I was told he was the only six grader who got a part.

You might recall Pippy’s dramatic performance in The Mastermind below:

No surprise.  No surprise at all.  Someday we’ll look back and say, “We knew him when…”  Great job, Pippy!!!

everyday family BOWLING ALLEY session | northfield, minnesota

I feel especially tender towards this family, having met them under heartbreaking circumstances in March 2009.  At the time, I was a photographer for Now I Law Me Down to Sleep and had gotten connected with Shawn and Sarah to photograph their daughter, Cassandra – who died shortly before birth.

We have maintained a connection over the last several years.  I even had the opportunity to photograph their youngest son at the hospital after he was born.

I have seen them in high places and low and a few things have remained constant – their love for each other, the love for their children, a lighthearted spirit in both (it is so very easy to feel relaxed and comfortable in their presence), and a clear appreciation for the life they have together.

Needless to say, photographing them is a pure joy.  Their youngest is a mover and a shaker – you might remember him from Me Ra Koh’s photography workshop last year:

Or from his aunt’s wedding in December:

Simply adorable.  His big brother is also a heartbreaker.  Watching the two of them together was priceless!

A few more of my favorites from the parking lot:

And several more from inside the bowling alley, which was the highlight of this Everyday Session:

You can click HERE to learn more about their story and see how they were inspired to bless others.  Sarah creates beautiful, personalized memory wreaths you can order for your own loved ones and you will also find information on their website regarding pregnancy/infant loss in addition to general grief resources.  Such a lovely tribute to their daughter.

Thank you again, Shawn and Sarah!  As always, a true pleasure spending time with your family.

No words more true than yours could describe them. The love for each other and their children. Wonderful people.

Bill Shell - April 13, 2013 - 8:35 pm

Amazing photos Tina! Makes our whole family proud to have you part of our extended family. Thanks for being such a great friend to Sarah, Shawn and our boys. Your caring and tender spirit as we mourned Cassandra will always be part of our memory, the photos you took will keep her a part of our family for years to come… God bless you.

Tina - April 14, 2013 - 2:10 pm

Thank you both for commenting! I’ll be adding these sweet words to my journal as a reminder to carry on. If I had surrendered to my fears/doubts instead of where God was leading me, I would have never even crossed paths Shawn and Sarah. I don’t ever want to forget the importance of that decision.
