one little word {2019}

2018 in review

It’s that time of year again! My word for 2018 was FLOURISH. It was perfect for the season I was in and pushed me in many ways. I began feeding myself a little more creatively with regular craft nights and expanded our monthly IF:Table dinner but inviting new faces to join us. I hosted our first girl-themed retreat and there were many milestones that took place in my family. I enjoyed many day trips and date nights with my guy, was baptized, went to Indianapolis, celebrated my niece’s high school graduation, learned to weave, said goodbye to marching band, and our Annual-Not-So-Annual Pub Crawl was bigger than ever! Friends and family members took park in random acts of kindness in honor of my 50th birthday and our Easter and Thanksgiving family gatherings grew by two. There were Prospects shows, ultimate games, days at the pool, and evenings by the fire.

A good year.

My word for 2019 hit me at the Winter Weekend Retreat: HOPE. It has a lot to do with changes that lie ahead in my home and family, adventures I am looking forward to with my husband as we become “free birds” when our youngest heads off to college in the fall, and where I am at with God right now.

Here’s to 2019… may the year ahead be ripe with blessings for you and those you love!

still room for three more | artist date craft night

The Artist Date is the idea of making time for yourself (once a week, on your own) to do something ‘enchanting’ => to play or have fun – something that nourishes you.

There are a number of studies that support the importance of play in adults – benefits include increased energy, creativity & intelligence. Do something good for yourself in 2019 & PLAY!

If you’d like to learn more and create a fun little journal to help motivate you along the way, join us on Friday, 1/4/2019 for a Craft Night Workshop (I have enough supplies for 3 more)!!

artist date workshop | craft night

I have had Artist Dates on the radar for several years. [Julia Cameron (author of The Artist’s Way) is the inspiration behind the idea.] I wrote a bit about it back in 2015 (click HERE for that post) but repeated attempts at this weekly practice have failed miserably. When my friend Kelli introduced me to these sweeeeeeeeet little notebooks, I thought it would be THE PERFECT way to help hold me accountable to this 2-hour weekly practice.

Even better? Enlisting a few other women to join me!

Whether an “artist” or not, the practice of Artist Dates can help you:

– refuel

– learn more about yourself

– stretch out of your comfort zone

– add color to everyday life

– be more creative

– play

Whether a momma of littles or a soon-to-be empty nester, working full- or part-time, single or married, young or old – you can easily find yourself REGULARLY putting the needs of others before your own until your reserves are dry. Artist Dates help fill the well.

Your first Artist Date of 2019? Taking part in a crafting workshop at my house on Friday, January 4 at 7:00 pm! The cost for the workshop is $25 ($20 if paid in full by 12/29) and includes a notebook similar to mine (I’ll be taking care of the cutting/stamping in advance – everyone will assemble pages & bling it up here). Snacks & beverages are included, in addition to crafting supplies. Women who attend will also receive an invitation to a private FB group to find encouragement along the way as we share Artist Date ideas, tips, and inspiration with one another.

jesus loves me SO MUCH

Before I get started, a little backstory to the porch step “tree” backstory (below). Whenever I’m feeling especially competitive and reminding my husband, “I’m the winner. WINNER. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.” He will tell me I am making Jesus cry. Admittedly, it does nothing to change my behavior because I know Jesus loves me and that my husband really loves being married to a WINNER.

Hahahahahahahaha! All kidding aside, I really do know it’s not nice to gloat even if I win the race upstairs. Or finish brushing my teeth first. Or am the first to set an alarm clock. And I really do know that Jesus loves me even when I do things that make him cry.

Anyway, while running last-minute retreat errands the week of Thanksgiving I spotted the most beautiful potted tree (it’s not really a tree, but what I’ve been calling it these last several weeks). With my lift restriction I thought it would be easier to return with my husband than to try and wrangle help at the store. Between hosting Thanksgiving and the crafting retreat that followed, weeks passed before we were able to return to the store.

And when we did, my tree was gone. 🙁

As silly as it sounds, it made me sad – I’d been envisioning that tree on my step for weeks. Then today, something happened…

my little tree

I heard a door slam, looked out my window, and saw a dear friend CARRYING MY TREE!!!!!!!!!!!! It was meant to be a surprise. She knew nothing about the little tree I’d been hoping for (or the disappointment that followed) yet here she was at my doorstep with a tree even prettier than the one I had been describing to my husband!

I could not help but text him, “Jesus loves me SO MUCH.”

As I have said many times before, there is no such thing as coincidence – this was a God Moment. Thank you, thank you Secret Admirers for the very special gift.

winter weekend retreat 2018 | all about joy

winter weekend retreat 2018

Our annual crafting and relaxing retreat took place last weekend and (as usual) was the perfect way to usher in the holiday season. This retreat is a timely pause button, a time to reflect and refuel. We spent the weekend simmering in All Things Christmas as we made beautiful things.

There were egg nog chai lattes, egg nog scones, PRESENTS, holiday decorations, Christmas tunes, and so much more!

We decorated ugly sweater cookies (my recipe is HERE) and spent some time weaving. A few ladies even learned how to stamp words onto metal, making bracelets for themselves and as gifts.

Joy was the theme of this year’s retreat & I swear it infused every part… except perhaps during the circular weaving breakout or when my camera lens broke. 😡

Virtual visits to France, the mini stapler I had to have, THAT song, Friday Night Pizza, sharing holiday traditions, Mary’s INCREDIBLE gift/talent & the Etsy shop that MUST happen, One Little Word experiences, endless laughter, Happy Hour, watching Heather at work, Toni’s mini freezer pies, Allison’s little girl asking about the swimming pool, Crystal’s yummy wine, SNOW, Mary’s bars, Renee’s sweet offers of help, and April nudging Teresa along with those darn coasters. It was a very special weekend with a group of very special women. I can’t wait until next year!
